Do you have a designated griller?
Don’t laugh. While people have generally come to appreciate the necessity of a designated driver, they don’t think twice about mixing grilling and social drinking. But given all the potential hazards that grilling presents, it might not be a bad idea to appoint a designated griller. They can always enjoy a cocktail after the food is served.

The overwhelming majority of BBQ-related accidents happen because people are under the influence, which often results in bad decisions. Alcohol is what leads people to think it’s OK to squirt lighter fluid on lit coals, without stopping to think of the flashback potential that lands hundreds of grillers in the hospital each year.
